Biography of Chief Michael Lyle
Chief Lyle was sworn in as Melrose's Chief of Police on August 7, 2007. He is responsible for the safety of 29,000 Melrose, residents as well as visitors to our community.

Chief Lyle began his law enforcement career in July of 1986 when he joined the Melrose Police Department. He has served in many aspects in law enforcement from the days when Melrose had foot patrol and call boxes. In 1996 the Melrose Police Department shifted from a traditional police force to community policing. Chief Lyle realized that the police department and the citizens of Melrose needed to work together towards making the City a safe place to live and work. He knew that the police could not do it alone, and needed the public's support. To this day he still follows that philosophy.

In 1999 Chief Lyle was promoted to Sergeant, was given the task of creating a traffic division and welcomed this challenge. During the organization of the traffic bureau, he created innovative programs to handle the ever growing needs of the City for safety within the community.

In 2002 Chief Lyle was promoted to Lieutenant. He served in several command capacities, including shift supervisor, Patrol Commander in charge of the patrol division and served as the department's liaison to the Criminal Justice Information System, Criminal History System Board and E911.

Over the years Chief Lyle has expanded his law enforcement knowledge. He is a graduate of the 221st session of the FBI National Academy. He serves on the Melrose Alliance Against Violence board and the Melrose School & Municipal Credit Union board.

Chief Lyle has been married since 1992 to his wife Eileen, who is also a third generation citizen of our city. It is not uncommon to see the Chief and his wife out and about in our community.

Since taking office, the Chief is committed to the quality of life issues in this community. He has continued to emphasize community involvement in holding his department open to public scrutiny.
